Werner Herzog, a big walker himself, once told Klaus Kinski to ‘walk like a crab’.

The most beautiful scene in the whole of Herzog is the dreamscape with the flying boy surrounded by Christmas Island red crabs at the end of Invincible (2001), the story of a Jewish strongman in Nazi Germany.

In Lance Duerfahrd’s essay on the ‘torment love’ of Herzog and Kinski, there is a section on the ‘imitation crab’ which compares the gait of Kinski to the crabs of Echoes from a Sombre Empire.

Duerfahrd speaks of the gait of Greta Garbo and ‘fundamental hieroglyphics’.
